KLAS Adds Zebra Printers

KLAS Adds Zebra Printers for Mailing Cards

February, 2001, Raleigh, NC - Keystone Systems is pleased to announce that Zebra printers have been added to the list of printers supported by KLAS for printing mailing cards and labels. Mailing cards are printed with the Library Address, a patron's USPS Zip barcode, Postal Permit, e.g. "Free Matter for the Blind", a KLAS transaction barcode, and all the other pertinent information normally printed on the patron address side of the mailing cards.

Printer Models: Zebra offers a variety of printers using several different print technologies providing differing print quality, speed and cost. For the application specifically for printing mailing cards, Keystone recommends the following models:

Model List Price Resolution Max Width Max Speed Effective Speed
140XiIII $4,695 203 dpi 5.04" 12"/sec 175-200 cards/min
105Se $2,295 300 dpi 4.09" 6"/sec 35-50 cards/min
S600 $1,795 203 dpi 4.09" 6"/sec 35-50 cards/min
S400 $1,395 203 dpi 4.09" 4"/sec 20-35 cards/min

All the models listed here can deploy Thermal Transfer technology which provides the stability of images for at least 1 year when the printed surface is exposed to sun light.

Model 140XiIII (one of Xi Series) is a dual processor and processes the next image while printing one, thus achieving a higher performance. Also, it can accommodate 5" width mailing cards printing in "picket fence" style. It requires a 5"W x 3"L continuous stock.

Model 105Se (one of S Series) can achieve a higher resolution (300 dpi) than the other models listed here. It has to print mailing cards in "ladder" style, and requires a 3"W x 5"L continuous stock.

Models S600 and S400 (of Stripe Series) print in "ladder" style and require a 3"W x 5"L continuous stock.

Ordering Mailing Cards: Mailing Card stock should be ordered with the back side pre-printed with your library's return address and the library's USPS Zip Barcode. An 80lb white cardstock with smooth finish and fan folded is recommended. Thanks to the New Mexico Talking Book Library, a die has been made for the 3"W x 5"L mailing cards, if you are ordering from the same place.

Charges for Programming and Setting up the Printer: Each Zebra printer, whether printing mailing cards or mailing labels, must have a "Zebra Form" defined to specify where to print the Library address, etc. It must be done in the Zebra Programming Language. To print mailing cards in KLAS, the Zebra form must be incorporated with KLAS Mailing Card Print program. Keystone's one time charge for this service is $1,200 per printer.
