2008 Julie Klauber Award Recipient

Raleigh, NC, February, 2008 - Keystone Systems is pleased to announce Solomon Oliver as the winner of the 2008 Julie Klauber Award. Oliver is a former volunteer and now part-time employee of the Talking Book / Special Needs Library of the Jacksonville Public Library in Jacksonville, Florida.

The annual award is named for and given in honor of Julie Klauber who was a national expert and leader on disability issues and instrumental in helping develop Keystone's growing national presence. It is granted to a library staff member or volunteer who works with KLAS, has shown outstanding service during his/her time with the library, and will appreciate and benefit from attending the KLAS Users Conference.

Oliver's co-worker, Chris Eaton says, "Solomon has been an immense help to us in many ways. Because we have a relatively small staff we have been unable to maintain a consistent staffing schedule at the receptionist desk in our public access area. Solomon was able to fulfill this need by providing a reliable presence to our walk-in customers and fellow staff in the building. The hours that he contributed were well above our expectations of a typical volunteer." According to Eaton, Solomon "contributed to us in such a very positive and productive manner despite that fact that he is confined to a wheelchair."

"(Solomon) is always very eager to learn more about the KLAS database and has been with us through our upgrade to KLAS version 7. Although he wasn't participating with the rest of the staff during our weeks of live webinar training (because he was taking phone messages and the like), he has viewed all of the webinars that are relevant to basic KLAS use. Now instead of transferring incoming phone calls to one of our staff members, he will access the customer's record and if their request is simple enough he will complete the phone reference service."

As this year's Julie Klauber Award recipient, Oliver receives a roundtrip Delta airline ticket to Cincinnati, hotel accommodations, and conference registration for the 2008 Users' Conference in Cincinnati, OH. KLAS libraries cast votes to select Oliver from a field of three worthy finalists.
